Background:
In 2004, the Virginia Dept. of Transportation (VDOT)
provided funding for municipalities to contract for
installation and maintenance of a traffic monitoring
system which would connect a number of CCTV cameras
to a central command center.
An RFP was developed and Securityhunter Inc., (formerly
Oracle Surveillance Systems Inc.) was the winning
bidder.
System Highlights:
While the RFP called for the installation of cameras
at eight locations throughout the City, Securityhunter's
winning bid further recommended that the color pan,
tilt and zoom cameras be networked using fiber optic
cable, rather than the existing twisted pair wiring
already in place.
Securityhunter, as experts in video surveillance,
indicated that fiber would offer a number of benefits
including the ability to monitor locations in real
time with a crystal clear image. More than eight miles
of fiber were pulled and fusion spliced throughout
the city.
Results :
The system has been in operation since 2004 and
the City is now able to monitor traffic patterns in
real-time with exceptional clarity at key locations
in Fairfax. When accidents or traffic jams occur,
police can be dispatched to the site with information
about the problem. The City is so pleased with its
system performance that it is adding six more locations
in 2006.
Even more remarkable, despite the extra cost involved
with adding new fiber network, Securityhunter was
able to complete the job ahead of time and under budget.
