Access Control 101
Access Control can be defined as a security system
that allows certain individuals to access certain
areas or computer systems at certain times. The
three basic formats of an Access Control System
include:
"WHAT YOU
HAVE" - CARD ACCESS CONTROL

Users have a physical access card; proximity card,
smart card or magnetic stripe card.

"WHAT YOU
KNOW" - SECURITY CODE ACCESS CONTROL

Users possess a multi-digit personal identification
code (PIN).

"WHO YOU
ARE" – BIOMETRIC ACCESS CONTROL

Users scan a hand or finger to a biometric reader.
Photo and voice recognition readers are also
available.
